The Foreigner is a hilarious yet touching comedy set in a rural Georgia fishing lodge. The story follows Charlie Baker, a shy and self-effacing proofreader from England, who arrives with his friend Froggy LeSueur for a weekend getaway. Charlie is painfully awkward around strangers, so Froggy concocts a plan: he’ll tell the lodge’s residents that Charlie doesn’t speak English. Believing he can’t understand a word, the locals speak freely in front of him—and Charlie becomes the unexpected keeper of their secrets.

As he quietly “listens,” Charlie learns of Catherine’s doubts about her engagement, her brother Ellard’s struggle to be taken seriously, and the sinister schemes of Reverend David and the racist property inspector, Owen. With the truth hidden in plain sight, Charlie gradually finds confidence, even inventing a comically outlandish “foreign” language. When the villains’ plot to seize the lodge is revealed, Charlie uses his outsider persona to rally the others, outwit the conspirators, and save the day.

Filled with slapstick humor, sharp wit, and an undercurrent of warmth, The Foreigner explores themes of identity, acceptance, and the transformative power of stepping outside one’s comfort zone—sometimes by pretending to be someone you’re not.

Charlie Baker: Age Range: Late 30s-40s. A meek proofreader for a science fiction magazine; he has a merrily adulterous wife who disdains him, yet whom he misses. Depressed and shy, Charlie comes out of his shell as he finds himself the center of attention, and ultimately possessed of such inner resources as wit and courage. Shy, introverted, and socially anxious. He’s terrified of conversation.

"Froggy" LeSueur: Age Range: 40s-50s. A cheerful British Army man who travels to teach the use of his specially designed explosives detonator package. He brings Betty souvenirs, and flirts with her at every opportunity. Boisterous, practical, and kind-hearted. A bit rough around the edges but well-meaning.

Betty Meeks: Age Range: 50s-70s. An elderly widow who owns a resort lodge and mothers her guests. Good-natured, ignorant of the wider world, she often wishes she'd had the chance to travel and see "real foreigners" as Froggy gets to do. Sweet, innocent, talkative, and full of Southern hospitality. She’s lonely since her husband died, and she adores having guests.

Catherine Simms: Age Range: 20s-30s. A pretty heiress going through an emotional time. A kindly caretaker for Ellard, she soon comes to rely upon Charlie for his quiet patience as a confidant. Intelligent, strong-willed, but conflicted. She’s engaged to Reverend David but feels uncertain about her choices.

Ellard Simms: Age Range: Late teens-20s. Catherine's dim-witted brother, heir to half the family money if Catherine decides he is "smart enough to handle it.” He is trusting and gentle, but no one gives him the time of day until Charlie comes into the picture. Simple-minded, naive, and kind-hearted, often underestimated by others.

Rev. David Marshall Lee: Age Range: 20s-40s. A polite, good-looking white Christian man, engaged to Catherine and, "it would appear, a good young man to have on our side.”[4] His charming demeanor dims for the audience when he is alone with Charlie, as he begins to show his true colors. Charming and polite on the surface, but manipulative and corrupt underneath.

Owen Musser: Age Range: 30s-40s. A superstitious, dangerous white supremacist who lives in town. Crude, mean-spirited, and openly racist.

I am willing to assist in an off-stage role, such as rehearsal assistant, lighting technician, costuming, etc.

BEFORE AUDITIONING please make sure that you ARE available for ALL show nights which are September 11th-September 20th. We will endeavor to work around holidays and actor scheduling conflicts within reason. Actors are required to attend tech rehearsals and all performances.
